Portugal: 50 years ago the Carnation Revolution – Europe

Today in Portugal marks the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution, the revolt that was initially only military and then also popular which deposed the dictator Marcelo Caetano and marked the end of a regime that was almost half a century old. There are many official events planned throughout the country. In Lisbon at 9:30 local time there will be a military parade presided over by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, in the central Praça do Comércio. The solemn ceremony will follow in Parliament, in the presence of several heads of state from the Portuguese-speaking African countries, the former colonies which, after the fall of the dictatorship, obtained independence. In the early afternoon, the usual procession will start through the streets of the center and will end in Rossio square, where other interventions of a political-cultural nature are planned. Among the collateral events, of particular note is the screening at the Lisbon Film Library of archive footage shot by private citizens on that fateful day in 1974, which until now remained unpublished and collected as part of a campaign entitled ‘Who Filmed April 25th ?’
