Madrid, 25 April 2024 – New twist in political earthquake in Spain. The Madrid prosecutor’s office asked today the dismissal of the investigation into Begona Gomez, wife of the Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. The news appears on the El Pais website. Sanchez, when the news became public, canceled public engagements for the rest of the week and said he would consider the possibility of resigning, blaming “an operation of harassment and bullying” by his political opponents and the media for a court’s decision to launch an investigation.
The political earthquake and the opposition’s request
“We are all very committed to ensuring that the decision that Pedro Sanchez will make on Monday is to continue to lead an essential project for this country, one of economic and social success”. Starting from the number 2 of the Spanish government, the deputy prime minister Maria Jesus Montero, the government, the PSOE and the online socialist militants have joined forces around the prime minister after the shock of the ‘letter to the citizens’ with which Sanchez announced yesterday five days of reflection to decide on possible resignations, wondering “if it is worth it” to continue in the face of the “mud machine” unleashed against him and his family, culminating in the opening of an investigation into alleged corruption and influence peddling towards his wife. The investigation had been opened after the complaint presented by the right-wing union Manos Limpias founded on a series of journalistic articles.
Former prime minister José Rodriguez Zapatero, in a radio interview, said he “understands very well and respects the feeling” that led Sanchez to consider resigning. And he appealed to socialist sympathizers “to mobilize” between today and Monday so that “the democracy of affections wins and the democracy of hate prevails”.
What is being prepared
A demonstration of solidarity with the prime minister has been called for Saturday in Madrid and beyond Change.org has started a collection of signatures with the appeal to the Prime Minister to stay at Moncloa.
