North Korea announced that it had carried out a simulated nuclear counterattack yesterday. The KCNA news agency reported that North Korean leader Kim Jong-un oversaw the launches, in what it called the first demonstration of Pyongyang’s new nuclear weapons management and control system, code-named “Haekbangashoe”. or “nuclear trigger”. The South Korean General Staff spoke about North Korea’s launch of several ballistic missiles into the open sea yesterday.

United Nations resolutions ban North Korea from launching or even testing ballistic missiles of any range. The alleged short-range missiles would have flown about 300 kilometers eastward starting from an area located near the capital Pyongyang, and then crashed into the sea. Despite international sanctions, North Korea continues to test nuclear-capable missiles and other weapons systems. Yesterday’s exercise, the North Korean news agency warned, was a “clear warning signal” for the United States and South Korea, as it was carried out as part of their joint military exercises. The tension on the peninsula shows no sign of easing.
