In Milan there will no longer be the ATM transport strike scheduled for Thursday 11 April 2024. The Prefect Claudio Sgaraglia has chosen to precept the workers of the ATM Group who intend to fold their arms. Drivers, train drivers, tram drivers and the various employees of the Milanese transport company will therefore have to report to work to ensure continuity of service. Instead, there will be a Trenord train strike, which remains valid.

The news was given by the prefecture of Milan after Sgaraglia tried to convince the city’s unions to back down on Monday morning. The prefect, after hearing the provincial Committee for public order and safety to ask for an opinion, then opted for the injunction of the ATM workers who intend to join the strike proclaimed by Filt Cgil Milano Lombardia and Uil Trasporti Lombardia, in adhesion to the multi-sectoral national strike by CGIL and UIL.

“In a dynamic of democratic confrontation and union relations, the prefect held a meeting with the representatives of the trade unions to attempt mediation. The invitation to call off the strike, however, had a negative outcome”. And from there the decision was born, they explain from Corso Monforte. The injunction is valid for the entire day, although the protest under the Madonnina was scheduled from 8pm to midnight.

The prefecture has not closed the doors to the unions and their battles. For this reason, it emerges from the press release, it has given its availability for the short activation of a technical table to guarantee the best operational coordination and for a timely and constant analysis of the related problems regarding safety in the workplace – one of the reasons of the strike – with the presence of the same trade union organizations and the companies involved.

Why the strike was called for

But why such an extreme solution? According to the prefecture, it was necessary to avoid inconveniences to the mobility of citizens, in conjunction with two events of particular complexity in terms of public order and security: the opening of the extraordinary meeting of transport ministers (the so-called G7 Transport Forum ), which will see the presence of the transport ministers of Italy, the USA, Canada, Japan, France, Germany and the United Kingdom for three days in the capital; and, from 9pm, the Europa League match between Milan and Roma at San Siro, for which around 75,000 fans are expected to be present.
