“As a guarantor I always think about the presumption of innocence”. The Minister of Justice Carlo Nordioon the sidelines of the general states of accountants in Rome, intervenes on the hypothesis that there is ‘clockwork’ justice behind the arrest of the president of the Liguria region Giovanni Toti.
”I don’t like clichés, I prefer to keep in mind the principle of presumption of innocence and the existence of the appeal”said the minister, explaining his doubts “it is not at the moment when a precautionary measure is triggered with respect to the imminence of the elections, also because in Italy we vote very often”. His doubts are technical and “they concern the adoption of a measure with respect to the times in which the crime was committed and the time in which the investigations began”. Nordio, in fact, underlines that“the investigation was not born today but some time ago” and adds: “As a public prosecutor I have rarely asked for precautionary custody measures after years of investigation, taking into account whether the risk of escape, recurrence and contamination of evidence may still exist many years after the event that occurred.”
The Minister of Defense, Guido Crosettospeaking on La7 at ‘L’aria che tira’, comments: “Toti, I read, was accused of having received funding for his electoral campaign which he denounced. I struggle to understand.” Crosetto confirms that it is a guarantee “with everyone”, Michele Emiliano included. The Minister of Defense reiterates:“when someone is challenged for financing that he himself finds it hard to understand, there will be reasons that escape me”. Crosetto maintains that there should be judicial investigations “evaluate only at the end” and believes it is wrong that, especially when faced with an arrest, “everyone’s opinion is that they caught a guilty person.”
“Instead I – says the head of the Defense –I have the habit of reading the papers and when I read the complaints to Toti I didn’t quite understand, given that he had regularly reported the financing.”
