Gianni Pavan died following a road accident in Casteggio. Professor at the University of Pavia, he was a researcher in the field of marine bioacoustics.

The 62 year old John Pavan crashed his Audi station wagon into a truck and suffered a rear-end collision yesterday afternoon, Thursday 25 May, in Casteggio (Pavia). After a few hours of hospitalization, the professor at the University of Pavia is deceased for the injuries sustained. Graduated in Natural Sciences, Pavan “was among the leading experts on acoustics of cetaceans“, recalls the rector of the University of Pavia Francesco Svelto.

The accident in Casteggio

The carabinieri of the Casteggio station, of the Compagnia di Voghera, are investigating the accident that took place around 2.30 pm yesterday. According to what has been reconstructed so far, Pavan would have collided head-on with a truck for reasons yet to be ascertained. Behind him was a 52-year-old from Rivanazzano on a Punto he has buffered the 62-year-old teacher.

Pavan was stuck between the sheet metal of his car. Extracted by the firefighters, he had been rushed by helicopter to the San Gerardo hospital in Monza where he died on the morning of Friday 26 May.

Work as a professor and researcher at the University of Pavia

Colleagues at the University of Pavia remember him as a “mild and kind” man, but also “brilliant and passionate in the field of marine bioacoustics”. Professor and researcher, the 62-year-old had concentrated for a long time on the study of whale language that, he claimed, they suffered from the noise caused by the ships which did not allow them to communicate.

It was really Pavan who was directing Interdisciplinary Center for Bioacoustics and Environmental Research in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences of the University of Pavia, a center which, among other things, he had founded himself. In the Cibra Facebook group we read: “Gianni Pavan has left us. Again we can’t get over what happened“.
