Nicchio with the shaken horse wins the General Rehearsal

The race took place this evening, Monday 1st July, with the horses leaving at 19.45 from the entrance of the Podestà Courtyard in Piazza del Campo, the General test (fifth test) of the Palio di Siena of July 2, 2024, Palio di Provenzano, whose Drappellone that will go to the winning Contrada was created by the artist Giovanni Gasparro (go to the article). As per tradition, the test was preceded by the performance of the Drappello dei Carabinieri on horseback.

The general test of the Palio di Siena on 2 July 2024 was won by Contrada of the Nicchio with the shaken Akida horse.

With all the mounts confirmed also for the general test, the ten Contrade took their places inside the ropes in the order given by the horses to proceed with their assignment (ear order): Goose, Ram, Owl, Nicchio, Giraffe, Panther, Unicorn, Wave, Wolf and Caterpillar chasing.

The results of previous tests

• The first tryrun on Saturday 29 June at 7.45pm, was won by Contrada of the Nicchio with Elias Mannucci known as Turbine on Akida (go to the article).
• The second testraced on Sunday 30 June at 9am, was won by Contrada of the She-Wolf with Andrea Coghe aka Tempesta on Zenios. (go to the article).
• The third trialraced on Sunday 30 June at 7.45pm, was won by Contrada dell’Onda with Carlo Sanna known as Brigante su Tabacco (go to the article).
• The fourth testrun on Monday 1st July at 9am, was won by Contrada del Nicchio with Elias Mannucci known as Turbine on Akida. (go to the article).

In this Palio di Siena of July 2, 2024, characterized by many debutants, six among the horses and, at the moment, two among the jockeys (we remind you that the jockeys can be changed up until the time of the scoring which takes place on the morning of the Palio), there are two pairs of Rival districts that face each other on the tuff of Piazza del Campo: Owl-Leocorno e Valdimontone-Nicchio.

In the lot of cavalli participants, there are only four who have already competed in the Palio, none of whom have been career winners: Tobacco (6 Palios run), Angel face (3 Palios run), Ungaros (2 Corsican Palios), Summer (1 Palio race) NB the statistics do not take into account the current Palio. Instead, there are six horses making their debut on the tuff of Piazza del Campo: Akida, Ardeglina, Ares Elce, Brivido Sardo, Criptha and Zenios.

The chronicle of the general test (fifth test)
of the Palio di Siena of July 2, 2024

Under the orders of the starter Bartolo Ambrosione, with the horses quite calm between the ropes and a close contact between Nicchio and Valdimontone who find themselves side by side out of place, the Bruco enters in pursuit.

Good move, and excellent start by Valdimontone, Leocorno and Civetta, with Nicchio’s horse tripping on the hempen rope causing Elias Mannucci, known as Turbine, to fall.

At the first San Martino, Civetta passes in front, followed by Leocorno and the horse of Nicchio scosso. Akida continues to run alone, takes the lead at the end of the first lap and, after continuing to run in front of everyone for two laps, goes on to win scosso for the Contrada del Nicchio in the General Trial of the Palio di Siena on July 2, 2024.

Tomorrow morning, Tuesday 2 July at 9, preceded by Jockey Mass officiated by Cardinal Archbishop Augusto Paolo Lojudice in the external chapel of Palazzo Pubblico at 7.45 am, the Try it (sixth test), with the entrance between the ropes which will be reversed compared to this evening: Bruco, Lupa, Onda, Leocorno, Pantera, Giraffa, Nicchio, Civetta, Valdimontone and Oca di rincorsa.
