PALERMO, 1 July – Yesterday a demonstration took place in memory of the 61st anniversary of the “Ciaculli massacre”, one of the first bloody massacres carried out by the mafia.

It was June 30, 1963 when a Juliet filled with TNT exploded causing the death of seven state servants, including policemen, carabinieri and army bomb disposal experts. In the explosion in the Ciaculli district, the Marshal of the State Police, Silvio Corrao, the Carabinieri Mario Malausa, the Chief Calogero Vaccaro, the Marshal of the Army Pasquale Nuccio and the soldier Giorgio Ciacci, the Carabinieri Eugenio Altomare and Marino Fardelli were killed. In 2011, the soldiers who perished on that tragic day were awarded the Gold Medal for Civil Merit granted by the President of the Republic.

The commemorative ceremony was attended by several civil and military authorities, as well as the families of the fallen, as well as a delegation from the Monreale State Police Association, led by President Santo Gaziano and the economic secretary Francesca Mannino, for the laying of wreaths at the monument erected in memory of the fallen.
