Not just Cogne and Breuil-Cervinia: the flood on Saturday 29 June also hit other areas of the Aosta Valley, causing considerable damage.

Stables invaded by mud and mountain pastures isolated by landslides with problems of water supply to water the livestock. And also flooded meadows and fields in the countryside of the lower Valley and hailstorms that have damaged crops and vineyards. The first assessment drawn up by Coldiretti in the aftermath of the flood that also hit the lower Valley in the plain between the municipalities of Arnad, Montjovet, Hône, Donnas, Pont-Saint-Martin is a long list of demands whose proportions are not yet fully known.

The damage count is just beginning and, in these hours, Coldiretti is collecting reports and directly monitoring the conditions of numerous companies in different areas of the territory. Of great concern is the situation of some stables and mountain pastures isolated by landslides, which are struggling to water the animals.

It is urgent to restore watering points because animals cannot live without water – they explain Alessia Gontier e Elio Gascorespectively president and director of Coldiretti Valle d’Aosta -, just as it is important to ensure access to pastures so that herds can feed themselves”.

Problemi in Val d’Ayas

In Val d’Ayas, crop problems due to hail and excessive rain that has caused streams to overflow, which in many cases are unmaintained due to depopulation and abandonment. “It is increasingly evident that the presence of man, particularly in the higher municipalities and in the valleys, is essential to ensure the maintenance of the territory: in this sense, the presence of agricultural companies must be protected and defended also for the valuable role they play in safeguarding from hydrogeological risks”, say Gontier and Gasco.
