The law of the Liguria Region on funeral and cemetery services is finally operational. The regional council has in fact approved the Regional Council Resolution, a necessary document to be able to activate the new regulations relating to funerals.

“Liguria has been waiting for a regional law for some time – declares Davide Veronese, national president of Federcofit, the federation of the Italian funeral sector, which this year celebrates its twenty-fifth anniversary – which could professionalize the sector and provide certainties not only to the companies in the sector, but above all to the Ligurian families in a dramatic moment, such as that of a bereavement. Much has been done in recent years, first with the regional law and today finally with the regulation that implements it. , in particular with regard to the opening of funeral homes for the final farewell to the deceased and the qualification and professionalization of operators in the sector. A result that saw us as protagonists, even arriving at a parade last December with our hearses in the center of Genoa. However, there is still a long way to go, starting from the need for a clear separation between Third Sector bodies, which make use of volunteers in their ordinary activities, and funeral companies, which are rightly required to make permanent hires. and continue to have highly trained and qualified personnel, in order to give even greater protection and certainty to grieving families.”

The main innovations in the funeral sector in Liguria – which recently came into force with the approval of Dgr 500/2024 of regional law 15/2020 – will be illustrated to Ligurian funeral companies as part of two seminars organized by Federcof it, which will take place tomorrow Thursday 27 June in Genoa (Palazzo della Regione, Sala Colombo, via Fieschi 15, 5pm) and the day after tomorrow Friday 28th in Albenga (Auditorium San Carlo, via Roma 70, 5pm). The Hon. Angelo Vaccarezza, regional councilor of Liguria, Davide Veronese and Piero Chiappano, president and national secretary of Federcofit, and Ivan Marinangeli, Matteo Munari and Liliana Allaria, respectively president, vice-president and councilor of Federcofit Liguria. “In these seminars, we will delve into two possibilities which have so far been closed to funeral companies and which are now finally absent”, underlines Ivan Marinangeli, “namely the opening of funeral homes for the farewell of grieving families and the possibility of carrying out ‘open-box’ transfers of deceased between neighboring regions, in order to avoid that, for example, a Piedmontese person who died in Liguria could not be transported to his city in Piedmont or, vice versa, a Ligurian person in Liguria, for the expected period of observation and for the last farewell from part of the family”.

Another salient point that will be addressed in the two Federcofit seminars will be that of the qualification and professionalization of funeral sector operators. “In the past there were no training requirements for staff, while from now on training courses will be mandatory which will certainly contribute to qualifying the work of the undertakers, hearse drivers and all the workers involved in funeral services , thus providing a better service to grieving families”, explains Matteo Munari.

A further qualifying point of the law is the many times invoked bureaucratic homogenization at a regional level: “Up to now we have worked with different, sometimes conflicting, requests from public administrations with regards to the procedural and bureaucratic structure – states Liliana Allaria from Sanremo and, with the new law, finally, the principle of homogeneity is affirmed, by virtue of which not only will the entrepreneurs work better and more serenely, but above all the suffering families will be able to have absolute certainty of fair treatment and equal opportunities to do an example – continues Allaria – if previously the drafting of the authorization for the scattering of the ashes was entrusted to the municipality of residence of the deceased, now the municipality of death will have to do it, as, moreover, happens everywhere in Italy”.
