An Urgent Appeal for Boar Emergency

Coldiretti Umbria: An Urgent Appeal to Address the Boar Emergency

Coldiretti Umbria has launched an urgent appeal to address the current wild boar emergency which is devastating agriculture and putting the safety of communities at risk. This problem does not only concern farmers, but the entire population.

The President of Coldiretti Umbria, Albano Agabiti, together with the President of Coldiretti Perugia, Anna Chiacchierini, the President of Coldiretti Terni, Dominga Cotarella, and the Regional Director, Mario Rossi, met the Prefects of Perugia and Terni, Armando Gradone and Giovanni Bruno to discuss the issue. During these meetings, they announced the start of a mobilization to obtain timely and effective solutions to limit the presence of wild boars.

“This is a battle of civilization, a question of primary importance and urgency,” explains Anna Chiacchierini, President of Coldiretti Perugia. “Wild boars represent a growing danger, causing extensive damage to crops in the countryside and also putting cities at risk. We thank the Prefects for their attention to our requests, which aim for a solution that protects the safety of people and the work of farmers and breeders.”

In addition to the damage in the fields, there are also health and economic problems linked to the possible spread of African swine fever. “Farmers and breeders can no longer wait while wild boars continue to devastate the fruits of our hard work, leaving behind only damage and desolation”, reiterates Dominga Cotarella, President of Coldiretti Terni. “Coldiretti will continue to fight to obtain the necessary answers.”

Management and containment of the wild boar population is an urgent priority that requires concrete and immediate action. The damage caused is only minimally reimbursed and often after many years, a situation that has led many entrepreneurs to give up reporting the attacks they have suffered.

“Coldiretti Umbria is once again mobilizing against a long-standing problem that has dragged on for too long and is ruining agricultural businesses,” says Mario Rossi, Director of Coldiretti Umbria. “Reducing the number of wild boars that devastate our territory is the priority objective, given that the uncontrolled proliferation puts at risk not only our economy, but also the environment, biodiversity, public safety and health.”

Over the past year, wild boars have caused hundreds of millions of euros in damage to Italian agriculture, devastating fields of wheat, barley, corn, vegetables and even vineyards. It’s time to put an end to this!
