A new “load” of death has arrived in Porto Empedocle. The 10 bodies of migrants found dead in the hatch of the hold of the boat on which they were travelling, after their departure from Libya, were landed on the pier, immediately after the scheduled ferry that left Lampedusa yesterday evening. Sea “cart”, with 54 survivors on board, which was rescued by the NGO sailing ship Nadir.
After the short funeral ceremony, held at the port in the presence of the vice prefect Gabriele Barbaro, the coffins will be moved to the municipal cemeteries where the prefecture of Agrigento managed to find space. Three bodies will be buried in Centuripe, as many in Villarosa, in the Ennese area; one in Bompensiere, another in Mussomeli, in the Nisseno area and two will remain in the Agrigento area: in Campobello Licata and in Castrofilippo.
The boat with the 10 corpses in the hold arrived, towed by the sailing ship Nadir, in Lampedusa late on Monday evening. Yesterday morning, at the direction of the deputy prosecutor on duty, the bodies were subjected to cadaveric inspection. According to what has been reconstructed, the young people – aged between 19 and 30 – died of asphyxiation.
