Starlink Mini, the new half-price version of the satellite connectivity service, will arrive in the coming months, as confirmed by Elon Musk
Starlink continues to grow and is preparing to further increase its presence on the global market in the near future thanks to the introduction of the new service Starlink Mini. It’s about a low cost version of the SpaceX division’s satellite connectivity service, which it achieved excellent results in Italy in terms of active customers.
While they continue to offer good performance, Starlink Mini will cost half the price of the service currently offered to residential customers. The arrival of the new low cost version was anticipated directly by Elon Musk which also provided the first information on the real performances that the service will be able to offer to its users.
Starlink Mini: half the price and good performance
The low cost version of Starlink will cost half as much compared to the cost required today for the activation of the complete service which, we remember, has a price of 40 euros per month for Italian users.
Consequently, they may be enough to activate a Starlink Mini subscription 20 euros per montha lower cost than the majority of FTTH optical fibre, FTTC mixed copper fiber and FWA (Fixed Wireless Access) offers which today represent the main technologies for home Internet connections.
Furthermore, according to a screenshot published by Musk on X, the low-cost version of the satellite connectivity service will be able to guarantee a maximum speed of100 Mbps download and of 11.5 Mbps uploadwith a latency of 23 ms.
These are decidedly high values (far higher than an old ADSL) and comparable to many FWA connections, wireless technology (but with connection to a terrestrial repeater) increasingly used in areas where FTTH fiber and FTTC mixed copper fiber are not are available.
Currently, Starlink has a standard speed, in Italy, of a maximum of 255 Mbps. According to Musk, the new low-cost version of Starlink can also be used as economical backup connectionbut with good performance, to rely on in case of inadequate performance of the land line.
Starlink Mini will use a dedicated and cheaper hardware compared to the full version of Starlink. This will likely also result in a lower initial cost for users. It will be necessary to wait for the launch of the service to obtain more details on the matter.
Starlink Mini: when it arrives
The low-cost version of Starlink will be available”over the next few months“, as confirmed on X by Elon Musk. There is no official date yet but the launch of the service is still confirmed for the near future. Musk stressed that Starlink Mini will be available only in selected areas. This constraint could be eliminated in the months following launch, for a global expansion of SpaceX’s low-cost satellite connectivity service.
