The outgoing centre-right governor has obtained a second mandate. Alberto Cirio was reconfirmed governor of Piedmont. The outgoing centre-right president obtained a second mandate by winning the regional elections on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 June. Cirio: “I’m very satisfied, it wasn’t obvious”

“In Piedmont, confirming an outgoing government is never a given. Just think of those who preceded me, all people of value like Mercedes Bresso and Sergio Chiamparino (both exponents of the Democratic Party, ed), who were elected in their first mandate but were then not reconfirmed”, commented Alberto Cirio. “I think the fact of being a person among the people, of listening to everyone, and of always trying to find the point of balance between different subjects. I am very satisfied with this result and I am especially satisfied because it is a confirmation”, he added.

Pentenero admits defeat

Cirio’s main challenger, Gianna Pentenero, admitted defeat. “I phoned President Albero Cirio at this moment, recognizing his victory and wishing him well in his work. Trusting that we will all work together, obviously each respecting their own role in the interests of the citizens”, said the Dem candidate.

Who were the candidates in Piedmont

The outgoing governor Alberto Cirio he was the centre-right candidate: deputy national secretary of Forza Italia, he had the support of five lists: Forza Italia, Lega, Fratelli d’Italia, Noi Moderati and the civic Piemonte Liberale e Moderato. Graduated in law, married, two children, outside of politics Cirio is an agricultural entrepreneur active in the production of hazelnuts. The center-left has deployed Gianna Pentenero, a member of the Democratic Party who was councilor for Labor and Education in the Region, supported by the Democratic Party, the Green Left Alliance, the United States of Europe, the Pentenero Presidente civic list and the Piedmont Environmentalist and Solidarity civic list. Pentenero’s candidacy had come as a surprise, to recompose the Dem party under the Mole, avoiding the counting between the Schlein area and the Bonaccini area, which respectively supported the Democratic Party vice-president Chiara Gribaudo and the vice-president of the Regional Council Daniele Valle, both already during the election campaign. The M5S has deployed Sarah Disabato, outgoing group leader in the Region who, before the split between the Democratic Party and the Movement, had been part of the negotiating table with the Dems for the attempt to build a large field. Then, there is Francesca Frediani known for the No Tav battles in the Susa Valley: graduated in Communication Sciences, she approached politics as press officer of the M5s group in the Region, then was elected councilor for the Movement which she left during the second mandate to create a his group. Now you are running for president with Piemonte Popolare. Finally the lawyer Alberto Costanzosupported by Cateno De Luca’s Libertà list.
