“This initiative, which this year coincides with the thirtieth anniversary of the Cities of Oil and the Ercole Olivario Award of the Umbria Chamber of Commerce – said the general secretary of the Cagliari-Oristano Chamber of Commerce, Cristiano Erriu – has given us the opportunity to note the maturity of a sector, that of Sardinian olive growing, which has now reached very high levels of excellence. Sardinian oils win national and international awards and, above all, the level of the companies, from an organizational point of view, has led to integration with environmental services and the tourist offer, enhancing the territory with a very strong local identity characterization”.

CITY OF OIL. “Today we celebrate the 30 years of the Montiferru Prize, the 30 years of the Cities of Oil and the “thirtieth anniversary” of Ercole Olivario. This coincidence – said the president Michele Sonnessa – is not causal, it has its roots in the entry of the Municipality of Seneghe among the founding members of our Network. From then to today we have taken on many challenges and achieved important results by working side by side, laying the foundations for a new vision of EVO oil, promoting the values of olive civilization – which are environmental, health, social, historical values - with a view to developing the sector for greater awareness of consumers and citizens of our communities. We did it with great conviction, working on the education of children, committing ourselves to combating the abandonment of olive trees and protecting the landscape, investing in oil tourism but above all building Oil Communities around crafts and knowledge linked to this age-old crop which risk to disappear and which have a strong identity value that goes well beyond the economic one. A value that we have the duty to defend and tell.”

Oil and tourism. The importance that food and wine products also have in the choice of tourist destinations was at the center of the speech by Roberta Garibaldi, of the Italian Food and Wine Tourism Association, who illustrated the First National Report on oil tourism. “The latest data arriving from the European Travel Commission – explained the expert – show how in their travels Europeans put open spaces first and food and wine experiences second, while non-European tourism chooses culture first, then food and wine . Tourists are looking for quality products and this represents a great opportunity for our country rich in products, such as oil, and recipes”.
