Tricolor celebration for the Fencing Saronno: in Terni, on the occasion of the Gold National Championships, Pierluigi Canettoli was awarded the success in men’s swordsmanship while earning the pass for the Absolutes (i.e. the races that award the Italian title) scheduled in Cagliari between 5th and 10th June.
Canettoli, class of 2004, was the author of a remarkable race. First the standard bearer of Saronno has won group 3 qualification without suffering defeats, a result which allowed him not to play in the first round of the direct elimination draw. Then Pierluigi has beaten in order the Caserta man Loffredo (15-10), the Ferrarese Quartarone (15-12), the Frosinone Valens (15-9) and the Cagliari player Diana (15-12) who had ousted the number 1 on the scoreboard Amodio, thus earning entry among the best eight and qualifying for the overall.
In the quarter-finals Canettoli then faced the Pisan Gianmarco Verdiani exceeded by a single thrust, 3-2pm, at the end of an exciting head-to-head. In the semi-final another thrilling assault with the young man from Saronno who is imposed 15-13 on Elia Cassolo from Trevisoa victory that opened the doors to final against Andrea D’Ippolito of the Victoria Gymnastics of Turin. Even in this case the details counted: the Piedmontese moved ahead in the score but suffered a comeback from Canettoli who won gold by just one point, 15-14.
