The festival, which for years has celebrated the authors of photography as the true protagonists of Days of Light, is now an important opportunity to discuss the role of photography in cinema to share experiences, projects and visions. In this tenth edition to be awarded at the ceremony on Thursday 6 June with the Golden Quartz for Lifetime Achievement will be Vittorio Storaro, the three-time Oscar winner for Apocalypse Now Of Francis Ford Coppola in 1980, Reds Of Warren Beatty in 1982 and The last emperor Of Bernardo Bertolucci in 1988. The director of photography, internationally recognized with over 180 awards, will be celebrated as one of the world’s great authors of photography with the Golden Quartz for his “unique journey spanning over fifty years of cinema history”.
Storaro, thanks to his collaborations with directors such as Woody Allen, Carlos Saura, Giuliano Montaldo, Alfonso Arau, Luca Ronconi, in addition to Bernardo Bertolucci, Francis Ford Coppola and Warren Beatty, has achieved an increasingly in-depth maturation of cinematographic style, which has allowed him, over time, constant research into the creative possibilities of the Image and the ability to “write” the light. Storaro’s artistic expression has concentrated, since the beginning, on light, in its multiple possibilities of writing, and on the dialectical value between the contrasting elements that compose it to subsequently move on to explore the light itself from within, discovering its values. expressive with a varied chromatic spectrum: the colors that compose it in their possible visual representations.
For Gloria De Antoni and Donato Guerra, the 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award celebrates one of the most important artistic paths in the history of cinema: Vittorio Storaro, the writer of light, claimed the expressive power of the image, the primacy of visual language, the need to express through color and light – and all their gradations – the intimate and psychological aspects of the characters, the emotional temperature and the symbolic logic of the staging. From The conformist to Last tango in Parisfrom Apocalypse Now to Redsfrom The last emperor to Dick Tracyfrom Tango to The wheel of wonders – just to name a few -, each of his figurative choices proved to be a timely reflection of an expressive need aimed, through the visual sign, at producing meaning in the filmic story. For the philosophical approach with which he practiced an art and a profession, for the incalculable theoretical contribution offered to the Seventh Art, for the legendary goals achieved, for the incessant study to which he dedicated his life, for poetry and he emotion that has given and continues to give to the spectator, the 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award of the Le Giornate della Luce festival goes to Vittorio Storaro.
