Mapping of the uninhabited buildings of Sutrio and their sustainable redevelopment thanks to the use of wood

Design studio residence organized by the Municipality and by the DPIA Polytechnic Department of Engineering and Architecture of Udine

The theme of abandonment and degradation of uninhabited or underused buildings in the historic center of Sutrio and its fractions Noiaris and Priola and their possible retraining favoring the use of wood are at the center of Study residence design organized by Municipality of Sutrio in collaboration with theUniversity of Udine (DPIA Polytechnic Department of Engineering and Architecture – Degree Courses in Architectural Sciences and Master’s Degree in Architecture) from 13 to 18 May. The initiative is part of PNRR Borghi Announcement “The Forest in the Village – The Village in the Forest”a cultural and social regeneration project that talks about the intrinsic value of wood, carried out by the Municipalities of Sutrio and Paluzza.

23 students are taking part in the study residence, led by teachers Alberto Cervesato, Alberto Sdegno, Luca Zecchin (scientific manager), who were welcomed by the mayor Manlio Mattia and the councilor Daniele Straulino. The works opened in the presence of the DPIA Director prof. Alessandro Gasparetto and with the intervention of the architect. Mariagrazia Santoro. Various meetings and inspections will take place during the week. Margherita Udina (Wood, Furniture and Home System Cluster FVG), Gabriel Stroili (Legno Servizi Forestry Cluster FVG), Silvia Masserano (UNIUD), Christina Conti (UNIUD), Giovanni La Varra (Barreca&La Varra, UNIUD), Paolo Bon ( President of OAPPC of Udine), Federico Mentil and Marco Ragonese (ARCHITESS Architecture collective), Sandro Pittini (Architect). Local artisan companies will be visited. During the Workshop, surveys, graphics and project models will be produced with the collaboration of local artisans and partners. Everything will be illustrated during a final public meeting scheduled for Saturday 18 May at 10.30am in the Multifunctional Hall with the participation of the representatives of the territory and the teachers involved in the residency, study and public discussion with the participation of the prof. Mauro Pascolini (UNIUD, Cantiere Friuli Montagna).

The studio residence launches research on architecture and wood culture for the regeneration and adaptive reuse of uninhabited or underused buildings in the historic center of Sutrio, Noiaris, Priola. An open meta-project tool, an abacus, will begin to synthesize a series of reflections arising from the diversity of resources and possible projects and will include the mapping and quantification of the phenomenon, the formulation of procedural scenarios and widespread intervention strategies, the motivations of the project and operations with matter. It will integrate the relationships between the wooden architectural intervention and the existing heritage, acting as a regenerative tool through addition, grafting and subtraction operations.
