11 municipalities involved, over 150 events spread across more than 100 public parks, gardens, urban gardens, museums and other territories up to Cuneo. After last year’s experimental edition, from Monday 20th to Sunday 26th May the Green Festivaldoubling the number of initiatives.
“The cities of plants”
“This second edition – explains Giustino BallatoPresident of Orticola del Piemonte and co-creator of the Festival with Fabio Marzano – it is entitled “The cities of plants” a quote from Italo Calvino. Plants are everywhere in our cities and represent the majority of living beings.”
“Turin – noted the mayor Stefano Lo Russo – it has the highest percentage of greenery per capita: we realize this when we go to other cities“.
“Green functional for life”
“The green – added the mayor – characterized the urban development of the city. With climate change, the theme becomes increasingly relevant: green is not only aesthetic, but functional to the dimension of our lives“. This year they are 11 municipalities involved (Carignano, Collegno, Moncalieri – where the Florì event has already taken place in April – Nichelino, Pino Torinese, Rivalta di Torino, San Mauro Torinese, San Secondo di Pinerolo, Santena, Settimo Torinese, Torino) to which are added “extra-provincial” trips to Cuneo and the province of Asti.
FLOR spring
The Festival del Verde weekend (May 24-26) also hosts FLOR Spring which will lead to Royal Gardens of Turin around 150 green horticulturalists, farmers and artisans from at least 10 regions of Italy (Piedmont, Sicily, Lombardy,..) and from abroad (Slovenia and Holland). The agricultural producers will then bring typical products such as taralli, jams, dehydrated fruit and vegetables and distillery.
Small citizens
“May 24th – specified the education councilor Carlotta Salerno – 250 children will invade the Royal Gardens. On May 22nd and 23rd, 19 nursery schools and nursery schools spread across the eight districts, as well as 4 comprehensive schools, will open their courtyards to the public.”
“It is important to sow the seeds of citizenship from an early age” he concluded.
20 gardens open to the public
Also on the weekend of May 24-26 there will be “Green Unveiled“, a path that involves the opening to the public of 20 private gardens of homes and villas, usually closed to the public. From seventeenth-century Italian gardens to modern green spaces, from centuries-old trees to unexpected groves. The list includes – among the others – Villa Abegg in Revigliasco, Sambuy Castle in San Mauro, Casa Luzi in via Borgofranco in Turin.
Walks in the parks
But it won’t just be private courtyards that will open. As clarified by the Green councilor Francesco Tresso the large parks and public gardens of Turin will be the protagonists of a series of free walks led by public green technicians: from Carlo Alberto’s plane trees to the Suor Michelotti park to the botanical rarities of the Royal Gardens.
For the Green Festival, theBotanical Garden of the University of Turin, with a free guided tour. The latter opportunity scheduled for May 22nd for the Fruit Museum and the Agriculture Academy.
“Festival on climate and environment”
“This week is so full of events – adds Fabio Marzano, co-creator of the Festival – it also offers a great opportunity for information on urban greenery, both public and private, and on the value of our natural heritage“.
The third edition of “A degree and a half. Festival on climate and environment“, which aims to make the public reflect on the future that awaits us.
Herve Barmasse
3 days of events, free and open to all, dedicated to protecting the environment, to talk about climate change from different points of view: hosted at Alberto Geisser Civic Library we will discuss a central theme such as water. Opening the proceedings will be the mountaineer and popularizer Hervé Barmasse who will accompany the public on a fascinating journey to reflect and be fascinated by the close relationship between water and mountains.
