Paola Nardi, candidate for Mayor for ORA! Barberino, expressed strong disappointment for the electoral campaign of his opponent Sara Di Maio, in particular for the recent presentation of the list of candidates for the city council of “Sarà Barberino”, which saw the presence of Eugenio Giani as guest of honour.
Nardi raised concerns about Giani’s participation, describing it as “inappropriate” given his institutional position. “Giani should be a super partes guarantor of the electoral process and represent Tuscany in its entirety, not actively participate in events of a single list,” said Nardi, highlighting a possible contradiction between Giani’s institutional role and his participation in local political events.
Nardi’s criticisms do not stop at Giani’s presence, but extend to the composition of Di Maio’s list. He pointed the finger at the choice to include close relatives of the candidate for mayor in the list, such as her brother-in-law and two brothers, one candidate for councilor and the other for councillor, defining these choices as “familial” and indicative of “a centralization of power in the hands of a few families”.
In addition to family issues, Nardi expressed concerns about the representation of “strong private interests” within the list, suggesting that this could distort the representation of the different souls of the Barberino community.
Concluding his criticism, Nardi declared: “These choices not only denote a desire to centralize power, but also the difficulty of forming a representative list, having lost contact with the citizens.” He defined the situation as “a terrible example of democracy and a terrible result for our municipality.”
Nardi’s statements raise significant questions about the conduct of Di Maio’s election campaign, highlighting the importance of transparency and inclusiveness in local political practices. These observations invite voters to reflect critically on the nature of political choices and their conformity to democratic principles.
