Carinaro, accident at work, the attic collapses: a worker dies

The accident at work happened in Carinaro, in the Caserta area, the 54-year-old worker was installing solar panels on the roof of a warehouse.

CARINARO (CASERTA) – Another accident at work in Campania. This morning, 8 May 2024, in Carinaro in the province of Caserta, Domenico Pierbenansi died after falling from the roof of the warehouse where he was working. The 54-year-old man, originally from Frattamaggiore, was on the roof of the shed of a window and door company. He was working on behalf of another company (whose headquarters are in Orta di Atella), installing solar panels, when for reasons still under investigation, the attic collapsed. The man thus fell from a height of approximately 10 metres. Unfortunately, there was nothing that could be done for the 54-year-old, he died instantly.

Police officers from the Aversa police station and the prosecutor on duty from the North Naples prosecutor’s office intervened on site, opening an investigation for manslaughter. Labor inspectors and technicians from the Caserta ASL also went to the site of the tragedy.
Investigators are checking the contractual position of the 54-year-old. From initial findings it seems he had no contract. The man is believed to be related to the owners of the solar panel company. Investigators are also investigating whether the worker was wearing effective safety devices.
After yet another accident at work, this one occurred in Carinaro with the death of the 54-year-old worker, the general secretary of the CGIL Naples and Campania, Nicola Ricci, intervened. «Words and words are not enough – he said – urgent, immediate and effective intervention from the Government is needed. In this country, as stated by President Mattarella, the emergency must be faced. For us, an exceptional campaign of controls and prevention must be launched, making use of all public officials who can act. This tragedy – explains Ricci – is once again the consequence of rules not being respected, safety must be the priority. We will continue with our mobilisations, with complaints and with new agreements, but these alone are not enough. We need inspectors, controls. We need to severely punish companies that do not respect safety regulations and we have been saying for some time that deaths at work are murders, a special prosecutor’s office should be established, that’s enough.”

Paolo Capone of the Ugl: «We are witnessing an endless massacre that every day takes away too many lives and destroys too many families and communities. We believe that similar facts on which it is important to shed light and clarify possible responsibilities lead us to say, with even more conviction, how central risk prevention in the workplace is. We need to invest more resources in worker training and above all in safety education starting from school. Where violations of safety standards are found, sanctions must be more severe because the protection of workers must be the priority of companies and not a budget item on which to save. For this reason, the Ugl also requests that the number of supervisory inspectors be increased. Work must be a right and not a cause of death.”
