PALERMO – A new wound for the natural heritage of Castellammare del Golfo: the fire that had been attacking Mount Inici for 24 hours, in the territory of the town of Trapani, has been put out but the damage is heavy: around 130 hectares of Mediterranean scrub and trees are up in smoke of pine and holm oak. THE FIGHT AGAINST THE FLAMES The mayor of Castellammare del Golfo, Giuseppe Fausto, draws the balance sheet at the end of an emergency that kept everyone in suspense. The flames, which had been put out for the first time, then regained strength in the night between Tuesday and Wednesday to the point of requiring a new intervention by air vehicles.

CANADAIR AND HELICOPTERS IN FLIGHT The fire broke out on the morning of 7 May from the Gagliardetta-Piano Principe district, affecting two fronts: one towards the Firriato area and the other at Vaccheria, in the southern part of the mountain overlooking Castellammare del Golfo. After about nine hours of fire, the fire was put out around 8.15pm, with the intervention of two Canadairs, but around midnight, due to the wind, the fire resumed in the impervious part of the mountain where only the vehicles planes can try to put out the flames. THE “THANK YOU” FROM THE MAYOR OF CASTELLAMMARE At dawn the first interventions of two helicopters and two Canadian airlifters definitively put out the fire. Fausto thanks “those who spent the whole day yesterday and tonight on Mount Inici safeguarding public safety. Thanks to the forest rangers, the fire brigade teams of Alcamo, Salemi and Trapani – he adds – and to the association of civil protection Fire Rescue. After the very serious one on March 9th, this is yet another injury to our natural heritage”.
