Franziska Giffey, German social democratic politician and currently senator in charge of the Economy for the Berlin administration, was attacked yesterday by unknown persons and was taken to hospital with a head injury, fortunately not serious. The news was confirmed by the police. The former mayor of the German capital, who in the past also worked as Family Minister alongside Angela Merkel, was attacked in the Neukoelln neighborhood.

“Hit from behind by a man”

The 46-year-old was hit “from behind by a man who used a bag containing something hard and who inflicted a blow on her head and neck”. Immediately afterwards the attacker ran away. Giffey was treated in hospital and then quickly released. An investigation has been opened into the matter. Last Friday, SPD leader Matthias Ecke was attacked and seriously injured by a group of teenagers.
