Piazza Garibaldi in Lugo will be refurbished. From early afternoon today, at the end of the traditional weekly street market, half of the square will be occupied by the construction site responsible for rearranging the entire area. The post-flood restoration works are among those financed by the Commissioner’s Structure following the flooding of May 2023. The project for the interventions was developed by the technical office of the Municipality of Lugo. The renovation of Piazza Garibaldi will cost 270 thousand euros which will serve not only to cover the expense necessary to redo the roof but also to arrange the parking area in via Macello Vecchio in front of the former discount store, now owned by the municipality, a structure in where the new judo and boxing gyms will find space. Specifically, the interventions that will be carried out will operate on the damaged points “with milling and scarification and with the removal of rubble and then resurfacing with local and timely reclamation as needed”. In the same way, the wells will be checked and raised and, if necessary, the damaged ones will be replaced with new ones.

The construction site, set up starting today, will close half of the square for about ten days, a period that will also vary depending on the weather. In this way, the free half will be usable for parking. Once the work is completed, the construction site will move to the remaining half, freeing the refurbished one. The entire intervention will last approximately 3 or 4 weeks during which the street market will be moved along via Foro Boario. “With Piazza Garibaldi we begin the second of the post-flood restoration interventions after that of Via Compagnoni – explains the councilor for public works of the municipality, Veronica Valmori –. We intend to carry out the works in the most efficient way possible, also to contain the times towards the market operators and have them return to their usual place as soon as possible. It is certainly an intervention of considerable importance and the first to concern the central squares since other restorations are expected in the coming months in Piazza Trisi, Piazza Cavour and Piazza 1°. May”.
