Bari. A new step forward has been taken for the creation of the railway connection between Salento Airport and Brindisi railway station.
The Council took note of the agreement, referred to in art. 4 of Legislative Decree n. 32/2019, conv. in Law no. 55/2019 and subsequent amendments, expressed by the President of the Puglia Region preparatory to the approval of the definitive project of further interventions relating to the “Railway connection of the Salento Airport with the Brindisi station”, following the implementation of the provisions that emerged at the conclusion of the Services Conference organized by the Italian Railway Network-RFI.
The agreement is expressed also given the opinions of the Municipality and Province of Brindisi and the regional Departments of Environment, Landscape, Urban Quality and Budget, General Affairs, Infrastructure. The project, which is headed by RFI, has a Whole Life Cost of 153 million euros financed with PNRR resources (52 million), with FSC 14-20 resources (60 million) and with MEF resources (41 million).
It involves the construction of the railway connection between the Brindisi Centrale station and the future Salento Airport station for a total length of 6.208 km, mainly in embankments, with two junctions for the connection on the Bari-Lecce line, towards Bari, and on the Taranto-Brindisi, towards Taranto.
A vehicular underpass, two railway overpasses, two railway viaducts will also be built and the existing road network will be restored. Among the changes/additions to the definitive project implemented in the provisions of the Services Conference there are further interventions of a hydraulic nature and on the road network.
Please also remember that the new Airport railway station will have two parking platforms, two external platforms 250 m long and covered by shelters for approximately 100 m.
Once these interventions have been completed, Brindisi Airport will be closer to the large centers of Salento and southern Bari: it will take approximately 10 minutes to reach Brindisi Centrale station, 34 minutes to reach Lecce, 50 minutes to reach Monopoli (Ba) and one hour and 10 minutes to reach Taranto station.
“An important connection serving Apulians and tourists who will be able to easily move to and from Salento Airport by train, which is one of the safest and most sustainable modes of transport – said the regional transport councilor -. Furthermore, with the adjustments to the road system, the Airport will be better connected to the city of Brindisi and this will guarantee safety and greater opportunities for intermodal connections and soft mobility”.
