There is a risk of a humanitarian crisis in the city of Porto Alegre, almost completely flooded following the wave of bad weather that hit Rio Grande do Sul in these first days of May, with the toll from the disaster in the Brazilian state rising to 57 deaths, 67 missing, while at least 42,221 people have already been forced to leave their homes. The Porto Alegre stadium was also completely flooded with water.

The governor of Rio Grande do Sul Eduardo Leite said that the ongoing emergency is «absolutely unprecedented»: the Brazilian geological agency estimates that the only comparison is with the floods that hit this area in 1941. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva promised that «there will be no shortage of human and material resources to minimize the suffering that this extreme event is causing in the state».
