Viareggio – Recess had just ended when a roar accompanied the collapse of part of the roof of the detached building of the Barsanti and Matteucci scientific high school. No injuries or students involved in the collapse
“We thought it was thunder, then they made us leave the classroom as we do during earthquake simulations”, this is what the students of the Barsanti and Matteucci scientific high school said of the moments immediately following the collapse of part of the roof of the detached building of the institute which houses 6 classrooms.
The collapse occurred shortly after recess time and only thanks to the internal structure of the building no injuries were reported. On site, throughout the morning, there were inspections by the fire brigade, the police station and the provincial administration, present with president Menesini, vice president Conti and the director of school buildings, the architect Fabrizio Mechini. A totally unexpected collapse, given that the roof showed no signs of leaks.
At the moment the students of the class affected by the collapse have been placed in the school gym, so as not to interrupt teaching activities. According to the checks carried out in this first inspection, it would seem that the hypothesis of the entire building being unusable should be excluded, an unusability which should be limited to just the classroom involved.
