Michela Andretta died at the age of 28 due to the removal of an angioma, 3 doctors from Fabia Mater under investigation

For the death of Michela Andretta, 28 years old, I am three doctors investigated from the Fabia Mater clinic, where the young woman was admitted to hospital last May 3rd to have it removed an angioma behind theleft ear. The entire medical team ends up in the sights of prosecutor Francesco Marinaro: the surgeon, the anesthetist and an assistant. Michela is died during surgery. The doctors explained to the family that the cause of death was a cardiac arrest. The accusation: manslaughter in the healthcare sector. It will take place today the autopsy, which will be performed by Gianluca Marella, the medical examiner appointed by the Prosecutor’s Office. At the end, the first provisional results on the causes of death will arrive. An outcome which, however, will not be conclusive, because the conclusions will be deposited on 6 July with the autopsy report, but given the ccomplexity of the tragedy it is possible that the consultant may ask for an extension of at least thirty days. Once the autopsy is completed, the family will be able to schedule the date for the funeral.

Analysis of the size of the angioma

Why is the case so complicated? Michela is died around 1pm on May 3rdor, approximately an hour after entering the operating room. The first aspect to clarify is what the size of the angioma was. Which was detected on the back of the neck close to the ear. A part of the body considered delicate when it is necessary to proceed with this type of operation. Doctors carried out preventive tests to clarify how far he had come deep into the angioma? From the little information that leaks from the 28-year-old’s family, the operation would not have caused any kind of concern. Yet Michela’s conditions – whose family and her boyfriend Andrea Carboni are assisted by the alawyer Marina Colella – they crashed in a few minutes. Here a second question arises: tests were carried out aimed at ascertaining whether Michela suffered from any pathology such as to put a risk the operation? Or some allergy? These are the two questions that will have to be answered coroner appointed by prosecutor Francesco Marinaro. Who proceeded to execute the urgent acts, but will soon forward the file to the group led by pm Sergio Colaiocco which deals with crimes due to professional responsibilities.

The family is demanding justice

“We are certain that the consultancy will demonstrate compliance with hospital protocols,” they say the lawyers Cesare and Eleonora Piraino, defenders of the anesthetist. Fabia Mater, for now, does not comment on what happened. Meanwhile, four days have passed since the tragedy, but there are still only three words that describe it mood of Michela’s parents: “We are in shock but we want justice”, repeat the victim’s mother, father and sister. A ring of the telephone, the receiver raised to the ear, the voice of someone announcing the tragedy. They don’t even remember who warned them. Even the lawyer Colella, their lawyer, has had some difficulty in these days in exchanging just a few pertinent sentences. Contacting them, for anyone, is painful, also because their suffering has entrenched them in silence. They still struggle to understand that they have lost their daughter: “We are in disbelief”, they add with great difficulty. The same state of mind is going through Andrea Carboni, the boyfriend that Michela met in 2015 and with whom she had recently moved in.
