The defense of a gynecologist working at the Barone Lombardo hospital in Canicattì, accused of causing the death of a baby in the womb on Christmas day last year, formalizes the trial strategy by asking for summary judgment.
The doctor, according to what emerges from a consultation ordered immediately by prosecutor Paola Vetro, is accused of having omitted the diagnosis of growth retardation of the fetus despite it being the result of an ultrasound carried out 19 days before the termination of the pregnancy. The failure to indicate the diagnosis on the patient’s medical record, according to the accusation, would have eliminated an element of knowledge necessary for subsequent visits.
Furthermore, urine tests and high blood pressure would have been very indicative of growth retardation. The patient’s hospitalization, according to what the prosecutor’s office hypothesizes, could have allowed the birth before her death as, however, happened on December 27 when the thirty-year-old woman gave birth to her baby who had already been dead for at least 48 hours. The doctor is defended by the lawyer Aldo D’Amico. The little girl’s parents are represented by lawyers Giacinto Paci and Diego Giarratana, whose complaints triggered the investigation which, initially, involved 13 suspects. She returns to court on May 20.
