The differences between the film Troy and the epic poem

The major criticisms received by the film are related to its enormous differences with Homer’s poem. Considering the stature of theIliad, however, it seems quite understandable why we tried to give the story a form more in line with cinematic canons, thus undertaking a series of changes. Anyway, the first and biggest difference is the total absence of the divine or supernatural element and its intervention in events. This allowed the film to take on a more human and earthly nature, focusing on the characters actively involved in the battle.

Further changes are mostly related to the protagonists themselves. The characters of Agamemnon And Menelaus, for example, are represented only in a negative way and their own death differs from that handed down by myth, with the first one surviving the war but finding his death once he returned home. Noticeable differences can be found in the conduct of the battle between Achilles and Hector. In the poem the two meet almost by chance, while in the film they openly declare a one-on-one battle. Further differences are found regarding the end of some characters. Paris, for example, does not die in the film and manages to escape with Elena. In the poem, however, she decides to return to Sparta with Menelaus.

Again, different than the others‘Iliad I am the fate of King Priamof the warrior Ajax and the famous Patroclus. One of the most obvious differences, however, is the length of the war. In the film, this lasts about a month. The poem, however, although it begins the story on average res, highlights how the Achaean siege of the city of Troy lasted for ten years. The story is therefore strongly synthesized for the film, eliminating numerous passages considered too static for a cinematographic work. Despite these changes, the film adequately conveys the context and violence of this war.
