On the eve of the European elections, a “Rebirth” meeting for the PD

In this era of political confusion, where every day we find ourselves navigating between scandals and empty promises, the Circolo PD “Rinascita” attempts to keep the beacon of pro-European hope high with an event which, it promises, will be more of a meeting of old people friends that a true testing ground for ideas. On the eve of the European elections, when the old continent seems more divided than ever between dreams of grandeur and bureaucratic nightmares, a meeting is organized that aims to “resume the story of our common European destiny”.

Big words, perhaps too much for those who have seen it all. On Monday 6 May, at the Berlinguer Foundation, via Emilia 39, it will be possible to meet Angela Quaquero, the Democratic Party’s candidate for the European Parliament for the islands. Quaquero, former president of the province of Cagliari and President of the Order of Psychologists of Cagliari, brings with her a very respectable curriculum. An expert administrator and active activist, her candidacy seems to reflect that mixture of political experience and social commitment that should characterize every good MEP. But is it enough? In the European arena, where matches are played on much larger and more complex tables than the local ones, every candidacy is a gamble. The second part of the meeting promises to delve into the mists of European dreams with the presence of researchers and speakers from the European Federalist Movement. We will talk about the “origins of the European dream” and “how European integration is a promise to be kept for future generations”.

High-sounding themes, without a doubt, but there is a risk of falling into the trap of an ideal that is too far from the concrete needs of European citizens who today demand immediate answers to real problems: unemployment, migratory crisis, economic instability. These meetings are a good opportunity for those who, tired of the usual political liturgies, are looking for a more authentic connection with their representatives. However, one cannot help but wonder whether, in addition to the renewed enthusiasm for Europe, there will be space to realistically face the challenges that really await us. Politics, after all, is the art of the possible, not that of the merely desirable. Anyone interested in participating or contributing to the discussion is welcome. The meeting is open to all, and could prove to be an opportunity to see if the PD, through events like this, truly manages to strike a chord with the people, or if it is just another well-orchestrated performance on the political stage Contemporary.
