Within a few hours the police shed light on the wounding that occurred yesterday, May 4th, in the middle of the afternoon in the center of Misterbianco: a 76-year-old elderly man from Misterbianco, with an old police record, arrested in flagrante delicto. He will have to answer to charges of attempted murder and illegal possession of a firearm in a public place. He was locked up in the Catania Piazza Lanza prison.
The victim
The victim is an acquaintance of his, a 55-year-old convicted felon, also from Misterbianco: he was hit by 3 gunshots in the lower and upper limbs and is currently hospitalized at the San Marco hospital in Catania, where his life is out of danger.
It all started at around 5.30pm yesterday, in the central Via Matteotti in Misterbianco, which was particularly crowded at that time. The attacker, who was driving his car, encountered the 55-year-old, who in the meantime was walking along the same street. The murderous rage would have been triggered in him. In fact, in those excited moments the 76-year-old, without being aware of his presence, parked the car and began to follow the other on foot for several metres. The moment the man crossed the road, the old man decided to act.
In an instant, he pulled a gun from his pocket and fired, hitting the other in the shoulders, both legs and the left arm. The seventy-six-year-old returned to his car and drove away. Many passers-by rushed to help the 55-year-old, collapsed on the ground bleeding, at the same time calling the carabinieri via 112. At that point the investigations began by the carabinieri of the Fontanarossa company, who first cordoned off the crime scene, entrusted to the military from the Scientific Investigations Section of the Investigative Unit of Catania for the inspection operations. We then began to search that entire area inch by inch, looking for witnesses and images from the video surveillance systems, starting at the same time the necessary information acquisition and investigative activities.
The circle is closed
In a few hours the military managed to close the circle around the alleged perpetrator of the attempted murder, who was untraceable at that time. Thus began a massive manhunt by all the Carabinieri patrols present in the area, coordinated by the operations center in Catania. The joint operational approach has proven to be particularly effective. In fact, retracing all the probable escape routes that the criminal could have chosen, a gazelle from the Catania mobile radio unit located him within a short time in via Zia Lisa, where the man, still in the car, now seeing himself surrounded by patrols, he offered no resistance to capture.
Further confirmation that it was him was the fact that the 76-year-old was driving the same car, an old Fiat Panda, and that he was wearing the same clothes immortalized by some video surveillance systems during the shooting. The man was then subjected to the Stub examination by the carabinieri of the scientific investigations section of the Catania investigative unit, to establish the presence of gunpowder on his clothing.
At the moment, the investigations would have made it possible to ascertain that at the origin of the attempted murder, there would be an issue linked to a previous argument dating back to last month, which the victim would have had with his potential murderer, for personal matters, during which the 76-year-old was allegedly insulted in public.
