MONTEMARCIANO – He left Italy as a young man, to pursue a dream of love crowned with marriage and then moving to Canada. A mocking fate took him away to a Caribbean country, during a holiday with his family, perhaps due to a bite from a killer mosquito. Disbelief and dismay have marked the latest in the small community of Montemarciano, which mourns the passing of Paolo Tofani, a 55-year-old from Marina who he had left over twenty years ago but where he regularly returned, to hug his loved ones and his friends again.
The trip to Cuba was a well-established habit for his family: a few days in the sun, in an environment so different from that very cold Canada in the winter months. Then the first symptoms: loss of appetite, generalized pain, tiredness. So the hospitalization became essential to clarify his clinical picture, an attempted operation and the terrible epilogue, with the death caused, according to the report drawn up in the facility where he was transported, due to a pulmonary embolism.
Paolo leaves behind his wife Dori, his daughter Alessia, his mother Simonetta, his brothers Davide and Marco. The first, foreman of the fire brigade in Ancona, was also awarded yesterday with the civic merit of the Doric municipality.
