Fighting fires in Sicily, the appeal of Bonetta dell’Oglio

2023 was a black year for the fight and prevention of fires in Sicily. This is why “Isola Fenice” was recently born, the association created by the Palermo chef Bonetta dell’Oglio to resurrect Sicily from its ashes.

In 2023, 60 thousand hectares were burned in Sicily, of which 10 thousand of forest area for damage estimated at 300 million euros (3 million euros have been allocated for now). «Last year Palermo burned, and they closed the airport; it burned Catania, and they closed the airport, they also closed Comiso for the same reason. We were isolated for days and the economic losses were frightening due to cancellations and lost income, to be added to the calculation of material damage”, says Bonetta in an interview with Giovanni Abrami on Identità Golose.

Isola Fenice was born on 7 December last year. The board of directors, chaired by Dell’Oglio herself, has 7 members: Cristiana Rizzo, Natalia La Scala, Marcella Tomasino, Marilù Denaro, Monica Mirri, Marina Polizzi, Federica Cocilovo. Objective of the collective legal action: litigation against the Sicily Region to obtain compensation and oblige public bodies to prevent and protect the territory.

The objective of the association is to oblige public administrations to implement all the necessary and planned activities to avoid the ignition and spread of fires. The email to contact is [email protected].
