LATIANO – Several hours after the tragedy occurred near conveyor 6 of the Brindisi sugar factory, which cost the worker his life Vincenzo Valente (46 years old), the community of Latiano goes back to what happened about 9 years ago.
It was the afternoon of February 11, 2015 when Vincenzo’s father, Cosimo Valente, died due to another unfortunate accident. The man was helping a friend to prune an olive tree on land he owned. A branch, however, broke under her weight. The 65-year-old lost his life after a few meters of flight. The impact on the ground left him no escape. The tragedy occurred in the Tanusci district, in the Latian countryside.
The friend, noticing the fall, immediately asked for rescuers to intervene via 118. When the ambulance arrived on site, however, the pensioner’s heart had already stopped. The resuscitation attempts made by the rescuers proved to be completely in vain.
The relationship between Vincenzo and Cosimo was confirmed to BrindisiReport by the mayor of Latiano, Cosimo Maiorano. The latter stated that “it is being verified whether the conditions exist to establish citizen mourning”. A possibility which, however, would not seem implausible since, as said by the mayor himself, “it is necessary to maintain a degree of fairness compared to previous circumstances”. Therefore, the feast of the Madonna of Cotrino, which is taking place in Latiano these days, will not undergo any changes.
