A national strike for the entire sector if there is no improvement in the working conditions of employees. But even if there will be no certain answers about the future of them and of the metalworking giant first and foremost.

The difficult situation continues for the workers of Stellantis with the unions continuing to ask for an unblocking of a situation that becomes more and more difficult every day. Uilm expresses the need for an urgent convening of an institutional meeting with the holding’s top management to obtain the answers that workers have been waiting for too long.

«We need – explains the union – to give a positive outcome to that automotive table that the Ministry of Business and Made in Italy has opened but which has not yet given any response. Company top management must provide complete clarity on the production programs for our country, indicating investments and timing. In the absence of this, we will take all the initiatives that a determined and responsible union must implement to make the workers’ voices heard, proposing the national strike in the automotive sector to the trade union organizations with which we have already mobilized together”.

Furthermore, Uilm asks Stellantis to complete and improve the industrial plan for Italy, assigning non-exclusively electric and widespread vehicles. Furthermore, conditions of liveability and decorum must be guaranteed in all factories and suitable workstations must be provided for workers with reduced working capacity. The holding company must choose whether to confirm or deny that principle of participation on which the specific collective agreement for metalworkers was founded. «We ask the Government – continues the union in the note – for responsibility in guaranteeing competitive conditions for the automotive sector which otherwise will be devastated by a poorly conceived and poorly managed transition to electric. It is not only the company’s workers who suffer but also those of the components and services industries, towards whom both social responsibility on the part of Stellantis and concrete protection tools on the part of a Government which has repeatedly promised to intervene, but which up to now has done nothing.

Even the arrival of a possible second producer could only be positive if it were added to a consolidation and relaunch of the company and certainly not if it arrived as a total or partial replacement, as the Government itself seems to suggest. In short, the divorce between Italy and the company that the Government has threatened several times and which would evidently be a disaster for the 40 thousand direct workers and tens of thousands of related industries must be averted. Government and Stellantis must assume their responsibilities in the interests of workers and the national economy.”
