Comment on the Gospel of the day, 3 May 2024 –

Perhaps it is a jolt that Jesus takes at Philip’s question. Show us the Father? And what have I done so far? The Lord’s logic does not come as immediate and clear as that of the disciples. It takes a moment: to repeat it in your head, pass it through your memories, savor it with your heart.

And then I imagine a man who understood that he was the son of God; a humble man, who has little time to accomplish the most important feat in the history of humanity. How anxious it would be for a normal man. How anxious, sometimes, our life full of responsibilities, alone deciding on our destiny, making choices while playing with the little time we have on Earth. What to ask first?

But this is not his logic. The works of the Lord are not revolutionary in themselves. They are new because they shine with new love, they give the impression of a brim full of overflowing water. Anxiety does not exist if you have already achieved what you came into the world to do, that is, to love and be loved.

There is nothing more important that we can ask for in his name: the grace of knowing that we are in the Father, of having – definitively, continuously, immutably – His love.
