ORTONA – The Committee for the protection of the environment and the development of natural reserves has sent to the prefectural commissioner Gianluca Braga, the open letter sent some time ago to the former mayor, Leo Castiglione, on the problem of the proliferation of base station systems for 5G mobile telephony in the area. In the letter, which dated 28 November 2023, and which the former mayor never followed up on, the committee asked to be involved in the drafting of the antenna plan, hoping for a public meeting with the citizens with the invitation to suspend the authorizations of new application pending approval of the plan.
The committee, which we remember is composed of Rosalia Tucci, Andrea Mangi, Davide Menga, Carlo Tortella, Pasquale Cacciacarne, has been working in the area for some time to raise awareness among the population of the problem which has become even more urgent in light of the installation of two antennas in two regional reserves: Ripari di Giobbe and Punta dell’Acquabella whose relocation the committee had requested through a collection of signatures sent to the City Council precisely to seek interaction with the institutions.
“Considering the matter, which is of great interest to the population, in relation to the criteria and tools to be used to ensure the correct urban settlement, protecting the landscape and tourist areas of our territory and the criteria for minimizing the emissions emitted, it is believed that a The municipal administration must have the utmost attention and protection of citizens – we read in the letter – Another aspect of close relevance to the Mayor is the protection of the health of the population through the adoption of suitable measures to minimize the exposure of the population to electromagnetic fields”.
The committee refers to the studies on the fifth generation of mobile telephony which, as far as health and reference parameters are concerned, are in the process of evolving, from an attitude of caution in this regard. The committee now asks the Commissioner for a meeting seeking a discussion which unfortunately did not happen with the mayor.
