Monumental trees, Coldiretti Liguria: “Immense wealth, it is essential to enhance it”

The monumental trees at the center of today’s intervention by Coldiretti Liguria. In our region, the latest census, in 2023, detects 139 (22 in La Spezia), distributed both in coastal and urban areas and in forested and mountainous areas. “In addition to the quantity of trees, it is interesting to note that the species that make up this precious list are 58 – observe from the Ligurian Coldiretti -. This demonstrates a heterogeneity that comes to us directly from the past and underlines the ability of this land to host a very large plant heritage, both native and non-native”. Gianluca Boeri and Bruno Rivarossa, president of Coldiretti Liguria and confederal delegate, highlight: “From wisteria to sequoias, from palms to other exotic trees; but also beeches, chestnuts, ficuses and holm oaks: Liguria possesses an immense wealth whose valorisation is fundamental, especially in the current context of climate change and hydrogeological instability”.

Coldiretti Liguria also notes that “an ecosystem of this magnitude must be preserved in an overall balanced vision, in which nature and landscape, function and aesthetics, allow the entire Liguria region to enhance tourist, cultural and environmental aspects. Also for these reasons, monumental trees, forests and woods represent an opportunity for development both for medium and large cities and for small municipalities. In this context, agriculture plays a fundamental role.” Finally, Boeri and Rivarossa underlined that “the work of farmers has become increasingly central in protecting the environment, ensuring constant maintenance of the territory and safeguarding the landscape and its biodiversity, of which monumental trees undoubtedly represent an invaluable heritage” .
