It was just after 11pm yesterday when the carabinieri of the Operations Center of the Maddaloni Company, in the Caserta area, received a request for help sent by a 22-year-old through the emergency number “112”.

With a trembling voice, the boy told the operator that, a few minutes earlier, his father, shaken and out of his mind, had driven away with suicidal intent in his car towards Valle di Maddaloni.

The marshal on duty at the station, after having noted down all the data necessary to trace the man and his car, immediately activated patrols on the circuit. Half an hour later the gazelle of the operational and mobile radio unit of the Maddaloni Company identified, stopped on via Ponte Carilono, in Valle di Maddaloni, the marked Hyundai, still with the engine running and a man who was trying to connect a rubber hose to the exhaust of the car’s gases, with the intention of inhaling them once closed in the passenger compartment.

The 52-year-old, upon seeing the military, immediately asked to be left alone and that he would in no way desist from his suicidal intent. After a long and complex mediation and thanks to the words and reassuring tone of the two carabinieri, the man let himself go and desisted from his intention. After a few minutes, the carabinieri reassured the son and the healthcare staff of the 118 service and had him intervene on the spot. The young man was thus able to hug his father again and allow him to be transported to the nearest hospital for the necessary treatment.
