Zhang Yimou will receive the Golden Mulberry at the Far East Film Festival

The awarding of the Golden Mulberry for Lifetime Achievement to the Chinese director and filmmaker Zhang Yimou will seal the “closing night” of the Far East Film Festival on May 2nd at the Teatro Nuovo in Udine. The award-winning maestro Yimou, with two Lions in Venice, a Bear in Berlin, a Grand Prix in Cannes, and three Oscar nominations behind him, will go on stage at the most important European showcase of Far Eastern cinema to receive the recognition.

His work “radically marked a ‘before’ and an ‘after’” in the history of Chinese and world cinema. On the same day, Yimou will also be the protagonist of a masterclass open to all. For Sabrina Baracetti and Thomas Bertacche, founders of Feff, “Zhang’s cinema has two fundamental turning points: having opened our eyes to the cinematic wonders of mainland China and having been one of the sparks from which this festival came to life”.

Zhang Yimou and all the events of the festival

Leading name of the fifth generation who revolutionized the aesthetics of Chinese cinema in the 1980s, Zhang brought forward “a free and total vision of cinema, finding continuity in the push for change”. The Feff will present three titles: the international premiere of the thriller Under the Lightin cinemas from May 1st, and – in world premiere – the restored versions of Lanterns red and Live!.

Many other titles are scheduled for the last two days of Feff: Customs Frontline by Herman Yau, which will close the festival on May 2nd, the Japanese samurai movie Bushido and Philippine comedy Becky and Badette which will bring back to Udine one of the event’s dearest friends, the actress Eugene Domingo.
