“Change the law, the current one is hypocritical”

Emma Marrazzo, mother of Luana D’Orazio, who on 3 May three years ago at the age of 22 died when she was sucked into a warping machine in Montemurlo, in an interview with La Repubblica launched a desperate appeal to Parliament on the issue of safety at work. The woman will be in Rome today to deliver a petition to the president of the Senate, of which she is the first signatory.

«Change the law because the current one is hypocritical, and instead we need more severe penalties, with aggravating circumstances. Otherwise everything is useless. In the case of Luana’s death, the owners of the company settled for murder without malice. And what happened to the fraud? The owner Luana Coppini got 2 years, her husband one year and 6 months, with parole. And a fine of 10,300 euros. The company immediately started working again, Luana died on the 3rd, the machines were turned back on on the 5th.”

«President Mattarella, when he called me on November 16, told me: ‘The laws exist, they must be applied’. For me it was a caress to the heart. However, I cannot forget Luana, who I no longer have. At the trial, I wanted to look at the photos of the reports. I looked at them all. The body had made 4 complete revolutions around the axis before a worker stopped the car, which was going at maximum speed. By now he looked like a ball of yarn, his head was pressed against the roller. It was terrible to look at those images, but I had to do it.”
