The decision on the fate of the pitbulls responsible for the death of the child at Eboli: May 2nd the turning point

Thursday 2 May marks a crucial moment in the horrible tragedy that shook Eboli, Salerno: the release of the two pit bulls responsible for the death of a 13-month-old child. However, this event does not mean the end of the story, but rather the starting point for the judiciary’s decision on what to do with the dogs.

The two pit bulls, Totò and Pablo, they are currently housed in the kennel “Dog’s Town” in Pignataro Maggiore, Caserta, where they are subject to medical seizure. This 10-day observation period is essential to evaluate the health conditions and behavior of the dogs, to determine if they are suffering from rabies or if they are dangerous. L’Local health authority of Caserta will be present on May 2nd for the dissolution of the seizure and to make a decision on the fate of the dogs.

Tragedy struck when the child was brutally bitten a few steps from his home in the Campolongo hamlet on 22 April. The little boy was attacked by dogs and, despite rescue attempts, he died within minutes. The timeliness of the intervention is one of the aspects at the center of the investigations coordinated by the Salerno Prosecutor’s Office: the emergency services were only alerted about 30 minutes after the attack, despite some residents having heard the screams coming from the house about half an hour earlier.

Another crucial point is the dynamics of the attack: according to testimonies, the baby was in his uncle’s arms when the dogs, let loose, lashed out at him, also biting the man.

The decision on the fate of the pit bulls is anxiously awaited by the local community and the general public. While some advocate culling dogs to ensure public safety, others call for alternative measures such as rehabilitation or sterilization. The judiciary will need to carefully weigh all the elements before making a decision that will have a lasting impact on this tragedy and the broader issue of dangerous animal control.
