Tragedy in Brazil, where a 30-year-old teacher died after trying to save her 6-year-old son who was electrocuted by an electric shock in their home in Timon, in the state of Maranhao. Investigations underway.

A young one teacher and his 6-year-old son died after staying electrocuted due to the malfunction of the power cord of a washing machine. It happened last April 20th Timona city in the Brazilian state of Maranhao. The two were in their home in the neighborhood of Curvy when the accident occurred.

According to local press reports, Diana Michelle Machado Santos da Silva, 30 years old, tried to save his son, Peter Vinicius Santos de Oliveira, 6 years old, when she realized that he had been hit by an electric shock. But she too was struck. There was nothing that could be done for them. When help arrived on site there was nothing that could be done for them.

The bodies of mother and son were sent tolocal morgue while it was opened an investigation to establish the exact causes and circumstances of their death. According to investigators, the child was electrocuted after touching a iron railing which was in contact with a faulty washing machine extension cord. The woman did not realize that the cable was worn and that she was leaving a piece of electrical wire exposed outside the protection of the rubber insulation. A police spokesman said: “The extension cord came into contact with an iron railing in the house, which was electrified by an exposed wire. The child touched the railing and suffered an electric shock.”

After the tragedy, Lt Raphaello Carvalho, of the Timon Fire Department, gave advice on what to do in cases like this: “The first step is to identify what is happening and how it is happening. The goal is to try to help and not become a victim at the same time,” he told local media, adding: “It is important to stay calm and try to identify where the person receives the electricity from: whether it is the hands, the feet… and whether an electric cable has fallen, whether a puddle of water also contributes, and only after having identified all this must we act.”
