The topic of marrow donation is not yet given the right attention, not only because there is little information on the part of people, but above all due to the fear of the consequences to which the removal could lead: for example, many believe that the marrow is found inside the spinal column, but it is present in all the bones and, generally, the sampling is performed on the bones of the pelvis.
On Tuesday 24 April, we students from the fifth classes of the G. Bodoni High School in Saluzzo had the opportunity to participate in the meeting held by the ADMO (Bone Marrow Donors Association), an organization created with the aim of informing the population on the topic of bone marrow donation bone, to increase the number of people registered in the Registry and the hope of sick patients.
It was a very interactive activity, thanks also to the help of the doctor… who allowed us to discover many curiosities, not only about marrow donation, but also about blood donation, including: the ways in which the bags are processed containing blood, how to prepare for a donation, activities to avoid after blood collection and statistics regarding the healthcare sector.
The moment that struck us the most was when we discovered that bone marrow, used to treat certain diseases, has a compatibility between donor and recipient of one in 100,000 (or 1 in 4 within the family group).
In our opinion, the meeting was very useful thanks to the resources and information provided to us by the specialists and volunteers present who helped us clarify some doubts and understand the importance of putting ourselves at the service of others; for this reason we believe that, even if you are afraid of needles or possible illnesses resulting from the operation, sacrificing your time and overcoming a fear can sometimes mean saving a life: the donation is anonymous and free, but offers a great reward emotional, as we have seen through the testimonies of those who were saved thanks to the gesture of the donors.
