Giorgia Meloni will run in the European elections

On Sunday, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced that she will stand as a candidate in the European elections, scheduled for 8 and 9 June. You said this during a speech at the programmatic conference of your party, Brothers of Italy, underway in Pescara. Meloni will be the head of the Fratelli d’Italia list in all five Italian constituencies.

It was an expected decision, even if it had not yet been made official. Meloni’s candidacy is above all a way for Fratelli d’Italia to attract as many votes as possible in the European elections, where preferences count, unlike Italian political elections. But according to European rules, the position of MEP is incompatible with that of member of the Italian government or parliament: it is therefore obvious that when you are elected to the European Parliament you will renounce the role of MEP in favor of a candidate from the Brothers of Italy who is not elected.

In announcing her candidacy during the Pescara conference, Meloni invited the voters of Fratelli d’Italia to vote for her by writing only her first name, Giorgia, on the ballot paper: “because I am and will always be one of you”, she said. Meloni and her party have not specified it, but it is plausible that on the ballot papers she will be presented as “Giorgia Meloni known as Giorgia”, in order to prevent the votes from being annulled.
