1661 – Ming Dynasty China occupies Taiwan
1665 – The artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini leaves for France, with the intention, among other things, of planning the renovation of the Louvre Palace
1672 – Dutch War: Louis XIV of France leaves Paris to join his army in Rocroi
1770 – Explorer James Cook discovers Botany Bay, Australia
1815 – Austro-Neapolitan War: Austrian troops under the command of Adam Albert von Neipperg occupy Fano.
1848 – First war of independence: after the Austrian protests, with the address Non semel, Pope Pius IX announces the withdrawal from the Veneto of the regular troops sent on 24 March “to the borders and not to the war against Austria”, together with a contingent of volunteers (La Sapienza university students).
The Italian politician and philosopher Vincenzo Gioberti, after the 1846 amnesty of Carlo Alberto, returned to Turin from exile in Paris and Brussels, and was received with great enthusiasm. In Rome he will also be received kindly by Pius IX.
1861 – Düsseldorf: Asteroid 68 Leto is discovered

1889 – New York: A ticker-tape parade honors the centennial of George Washington’s first presidency.
1896 – Jules Méline succeeds Léon Bourgeois as Prime Minister of the French Republic

Italy: Giorgio Amendola launches an appeal in l’Unità di Torino that will remain famous: “Criminals must be eliminated. With Jacobin resolve the knife must be plunged into the wound, all the rottenness must be cut away. This is not the time to indulge in indulgences. Pity is dead”
1946 – Prime Minister of Japan Hideki Tōjō and twenty-eight Japanese politicians are accused of war crimes
1955 – Italy: Giovanni Gronchi is elected President of the Italian Republic with 658 votes out of 833; he will be sworn in on May 11
1959 – India: the Tibetan government in exile settles in Mussoorie
1961 – Italy: Luciano Pavarotti makes his operatic debut in the role of Rodolfo in La Bohème, at the Reggio Emilia opera house
1965 – Vatican: Pope Paul VI publishes the encyclical “Mense Maio”, on supplications to the Virgin Mary in the month of May
1967 – USA: due to his refusal to join the army, the boxer Muhammad Ali (alias Cassius Clay) is defrauded of the world title (the correct date is: April 28)
1969USA: Jazz musician Duke Ellington receives the Presidential Medal of Freedom
Alain Poher becomes interim President of the French Republic following the resignation of Charles de Gaulle
1973 – The Soviet space station Salyut 2 crashes and is destroyed
1974 – USA: President Richard Nixon announces the release of the transcript of tapes recorded in relation to the Watergate Scandal
1975 – Vietnam War: Operation Frequent Wind – the last American citizens begin evacuating from Saigon in preparation for a possible final North Vietnamese attack. For the USA it is the beginning of disengagement from the South-East Asian war zone
1981 – Netherlands: a single vote of margin approves the law legalizing abortion
1985 – Florida: The Space Shuttle Challenger departs from the John F. Kennedy Space Center on its seventh mission
1988 – USSR: Glasnost takes hold. Mikhail Gorbachev promises greater religious freedom in the Soviet Union
1990 – Switzerland: third vote in 20 years to grant women the vote in the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden, result: women continue to not be able to vote
2001 – A group of international researchers, led by Paolo De Bernardis and Andrew Lange of the California Institute of Technology, presents the discovery of the “sound” of the Big Bang.
2004 – USA: hearing of President George W. Bush and his deputy Dick Cheney regarding the events of September 11, 2001.
2005 – Apple Computer begins distribution of the new MacOS: Mac OS
Cardinal Angelo Sodano is elected Dean of the College of Cardinals
2006 – Faroe Islands: the Norðoyatunnilin is inaugurated, an underwater tunnel over 6 km long that crosses the Leirvíksfjørður and connects the island of Eysturoy to that of Borðoy. It is the longest tunnel in the Faroes.
2011 – William Duke of Cambridge marries Kate Middleton
2017 – Turkey blocks access to Wikipedia
