1969USA: Jazz musician Duke Ellington receives the Presidential Medal of Freedom
Alain Poher becomes interim President of the French Republic following the resignation of Charles de Gaulle
1973 – The Soviet space station Salyut 2 crashes and is destroyed
1974 – USA: President Richard Nixon announces the release of the transcript of tapes recorded in relation to the Watergate Scandal
1975 – Vietnam War: Operation Frequent Wind – the last American citizens begin evacuating from Saigon in preparation for a possible final North Vietnamese attack. For the USA it is the beginning of disengagement from the South-East Asian war zone

1990 – Switzerland: third vote in 20 years to grant women the vote in the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden, result: women continue to not be able to vote
