March 6, 2013 David Rossi, born in Siena on 2 June 1961, fell from his office window and died shortly afterwards. The Siena prosecutor’s office investigated the matter. Two other investigations had already been carried out previously, which had reached the conclusion that it was a suicide, but many elements were never clarified. Of the twelve cameras present, videos were taken from only one to ascertain the facts.
In July 2013, Rossi’s widow, Antonella Tognazzi, was investigated and then brought to trial with the journalist Davide Vecchi (at the time correspondent for Il Fatto Quotidiano), with an official procedure by the magistrate, Aldo Natalini, with the accusation of violation of privacy: it is the first and only case in Italy, as recorded in the maxim of the Court of Cassation. The trial was the subject of numerous controversies which led to some parliamentary questions and the intervention of the international observatory on freedom of the press at Columbia University in New York because it was deemed an attempt to limit the right to information. It ended in January 2018 with full acquittal and a harsh sentence by the judge, Alessio Innocenti, who stigmatized the very opening of the investigation file against Tognazzi and Vecchi.
