Marvel films are renowned for their easter eggs, small cameos and references to previous (and sometimes future!) chapters of the large narrative universe of the House of Ideas. But they are not the only ones: even if unintentionally, the director Luca Guadagnino made a connection between his new film Challengers and the saga of Spider-Man through a nice quote.
At the center of the film, after all, there is a star who comes from the MCU: Zendayawho plays tennis player Tashi Duncan, is best known for her role as MJSpider-Man’s love interest Tom Hollandwho then became his partner even off the set.
And in Challengers [QUI LA NOSTRA RECENSIONE] is actually mentioned Spider-Man, although not Holland’s version. The reference is in a scene where Tashi is talking about tennis with her husband Art (Mike Faist). At a certain point their daughter Lily enters the room and asks to watch a film: Spider-Man – Into the Spider-Verse. This is the Sony animated film, but the reference still surprised fans, given that Zendaya is part of the Spider-Verse.
According to what Guadagnino declared, the Easter egg it was completely random: «Obtaining the rights to talk about another work in a film is complicated. In this case our producer, Amy Pascal, helped us. I asked her if it would be possible to use one of her titles from her catalogue, so that it would be easier to obtain the rights. Obviously, Lily is a child, so she would never choose The Social Network or The Post, so I asked her, “Why not make her watch a Spider-Man cartoon?”
«I only realized now that it might seem like an inside joke. Evidently my unconscious guided me.”said the director.
