On Wednesday 17 April, together with a group of representatives of the Motorcycling in Safety Committee we had a meeting with the Metropolitan City of Florence; Tommaso Triberti, Councilor responsible for relations with the Internal Areas, Engineer Carosella, the surveyor Landi and the head of the provincial police of the Metropolitan City were present. The meeting was very long but positive and, in the opinion of the participants, produced fruitful results. The representatives of the Committee highlighted the problems relating to road safety in the streets of the municipality of Firenzuola, in particular in the hamlets, also in light of the numerous accidents caused by motorcycles in these first months of 2024, reiterating the requests already made to the Metropolitan City in previous meetings.
Triberti and Engineer Carosella have announced that they will shortly give their approval to the municipality of Firenzuola for the installation of 2 speed cameras in the streets under the jurisdiction of the metropolitan city (San Pellegrino and Rifredo); they also guaranteed that: 1) they will carry out interventions as soon as possible to install additional horizontal signs and posters on the roads; 2) they will use the provincial police to carry out road checks after coordination with the municipal police of the municipality of Firenzuola; 3) are available, if the municipality of Firenzuola presents requests for intervention in the hamlets (e.g. setting a 30km speed limit), to examine and agree on them jointly; Finally, they communicated that the attempts made to date at the Prefecture of Florence to participate in a coordination table of all the interested bodies have not been successful. While reiterating that they will try to involve the Prefecture again, they invited the Committee to also directly renew this request.
The meeting ended by agreeing that they will keep in touch with us on the developments of the interventions previously reported. As a committee we will continue to ask the Prefect of Florence to convene a coordination table of all the bodies that have responsibility for road safety as did the Prefect of Bologna, who convened the Coordination Table on the safety of the SS 65 della Futa. The interested municipalities, ANAS, the Carabinieri, the traffic police and the Metropolitan City participated in this table. The table confirmed that it is implementing extraordinary interventions for road safety along state road 65, which goes up from Bologna to the Radicosa pass, where hundreds of motorcyclists converge at the weekend, especially in the summer period, and numerous accidents occur with deaths and injuries.
It was decided to implement specific prevention strategies, planning targeted checks, which already in 2023 produced a reduction in accidents in the summer period. Our commitment will continue over time until we obtain the interventions we have asked for to guarantee the safety of the citizens who live in the municipality of Firenzuola as well as the motorcyclists themselves.
